Osaka

Osakans have a saying: kuidaore — eat yourself bankrupt. Japan’s third city is its most extroverted, a place of comedians, market stalls and neon reflected in canal water.

What to see

Dotonbori after dark is the postcard: takoyaki stands, the Glico running man, boats sliding under the bridges. By day, Osaka Castle and its park tell the story of the warlord Hideyoshi, while the Kuromon market feeds you fresh uni and wagyu skewers as you walk.

Day trips

Osaka is the ideal base for Nara’s deer park and great Buddha (45 min), Himeji’s white castle (30 min by shinkansen), and Koyasan’s mountain monasteries for an overnight temple stay.

When to go

Osaka works year-round; food is the point and the season barely matters. Pair two Osaka nights with Kyoto on any itinerary and you have the classic Kansai combination.
